During our last 20 years of contracting, while working in 17 different states, we’ve seen millions of cubic yards of storm debris hauled off to landfills. We’ve cleaned up after hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms, and a Derecho. It became apparent that the modern stick framed building paradigm was ending up in landfills, not able to stand a chance against high winds and storms. Notably, old-fashioned timber framed stuctures such as barns and houses, could take a beating much better and would remain standing when disasters struck. This has fired our passion for timber framing.

During construction of the Hamilton Barn on the Iowa prairie, we experienced a wind event with 60 mph sustained winds. Multiple other stick framed buildings in the neighborhood were taken down by the winds. This frame, finished and unattached, stood rock-solid and unfazed.
